This is a great book for anyone wishing to get better at music notation, whether you're a composer, typesetter, or arranger. It goes in depth on many topics like percussion, leger lines, clef changes, spacing, and more. Highly recommended.

Das Buch kannte ich schon, jetzt kann ich es endlich auch, auf Papier, mein Eigen nennen. Es ist ein Standardwerk im Notensatz (musical engraving, auch digital), das viel erklärt, mit vielen Details (leider nicht immer allen obskuren Details, oder nicht immer direkt an der Stelle, wo man die Information vermutet).Leider kam es mit bereits beschädigtem Einband an, frisch aus der Versandverpackung ☹

Muito bom o livro! Para quem quer entrar no mundo da edição de partituras esse livro é importante!O único problema é não ter zoom para o aplicativo kindle no pc!

Als Notensetzer mit höchsten Ansprüchen an die korrekte Umsetzung von Kompositionen in die allgemeingültige Musiknotationssprache nutze ich das Handbuch regelmäßig zur Lösung gewisser Problemstellungen. Bisher ist noch kein Fall unberücksichtigt, kein Problem ungelöst geblieben! Die Inhalte und das Layout sind detailliert und übersichtlich strukturiert dargestellt, sodass man schnell fündig wird. Zahlreiche Notenbeispiele veranschaulichen die Notensatzregeln, die leicht verständlich und nachvollziehbar beschrieben sind. So ist es einfach eine Freude, das Buch zur Hand zu nehmen und darin zu stöbern.Dieser umfassende und absolut zuverlässige Ratgeber setzt definitiv Maßstäbe in Fragen der Notationspraxis. Er gilt als der neue Standard und ist sein Geld definitiv wert. Ich will ihn nicht mehr missen.

In these days of self editing being so popular, with music engraving software accessible to everybody, having such an encyclopedia of what should be done and how is more than precious. Any doubt, and you can immediately refer to the solution, finding in your way other things you were doing wrong, of course. Very helpful.

I turn to this book almost daily to clarify some aspect of notation in my work. It is a real accomplishment and definitely the new standard in questions of notation practice. I have read people complaining about this or that minor detail that she recommends but at least she offers a viewpoint on almost any imaginable topic. If you are at all serious about producing good material, you need this book!

For me as a composer, this book is an invaluable guide for writing music for live performing musicians.There are not many extensive books out there in this field! So it's really just great for composers, arrangers, orchestrators, and also for software engineers for music notation.

I chanced on Behind Bars in a local bookshop but was put off by the price. Yet the desire to acquire it lingered. An excellent price from Amazon made the purchase possible. The aim of the book is to standardise music notation.Truly a composer's bible. Like all good reference books, it is clearly set out out with cross references included in the text rather than the need to use the index. As a string player, I've so far dipped into the section on writing for strings. I particularly like the direct and clear language; the writer shows an awareness of music seen from the performer's point of view. Examples of graphic contemporary notation are included. This a good thing but I wonder if 'domestic' (as opposed to Publisher) users have music programmes sophisticated enough to include these. Cons? Are there any? Perhaps delving in when time can be better spent doing something else!
