I don't have a problem with the product itself. I was just familiarizing myself with it. You have to install the CO2 cartridge which comes with it, loose. That's fine. I just wanted to make sure I was doing it right. This thing is bundled up TIGHT.The instructions are just TOO SMALL to read, even with my little magnifying glass. You'd think safety data and instructions for a LIFE SAFETY device would be readable.

Schade.

The Restube Extreme is design to be an emergency flotation aid targeted to extreme watersports athletes that do activities that wouldn't normally involve wearing a lifejacket. I am a kiteboarder which falls right inline with the intended use of this product. While you can kiteboard in a full PFD, it is extremely motion limiting, and the PFD interferes with the harness that connects you to the kite's control bar. As a result, I've been kiting for years without any buoyancy aid. Adding the Restube onto my harness gives me a much better peace of mind when I am far offshore in deeper waters in the event I have an equipment malfunction and have to swim back to shore (this has happened to me before!). Alternatively, this device can also be worn around the waist with the included waist strap instead of attaching it to a kiteboarding/windsurfing harness which is great for paddle boarding or surfing. I also really like that there's a small zippered pocket on the pouch which can be used to store a key; this is a great bonus feature! My only complaint about the Restube Extreme is that it is quite hard to repack into the case and close once the CO2 cartridge is installed on the deflated buoy. I haven't actually tried testing the inflation yet because I haven't wanted to waste a CO2 cartridge.Replacement Cartridge Tip!:THIS DOES USE A STANDARD CO2 CARTRIDGE! The threaded CO2 style cartridges required for this product are very commonly available at sporting goods store and bike shops! They are used for emergency bike tire inflation devices. So if you're having trouble finding replacement cartridges for the Restube just go to the bike section of your sports store or local bike shop!

[Note: This first background paragraph is the same as I've provided for my review of the Restube Active as it applies equally here as well.]I go kayaking and rafting in lakes and rivers, and when I'm using a sit on top I often like to slip off the side and swim around. While I wear a PFD in the kayak, that's not exactly conducive to swimming so I will typically leave that on my kayak while I swim. Twice in the past I've run into scenarios where I wished something like this existed. The first time I got into the water to swim and after a while I realized I had forgotten to deploy my drift anchor and my kayak was much farther off than expected, and it was getting farther. Getting back to it was a bit of a scary experience as I was getting really tired and had to float to recover several times on the way back to it. The second time as I was swimming back, I got a bad cramp and I really struggled to get back to my kayak then as well. If I had this on me, both of those potentially fatal situations would not have been so worrisome. The Restube Extreme has a well-designed and proven release mechanism that relies on a bar inserted through opposing sets of nylon webbing. This makes for an extremely secure, yet easy to deploy system. The Extreme leverages a 30mm strap and buckle system over the Active's lighter weight 25mm system, though they both feel quite tough. The pouch on the Extreme also includes a small zipper pocket which is a nice feature, but due to the snug fit of the buoy itself, you're only really able to put small basically flat things in there; for example, you can't stick another 18g CO2 in there. It arrives preconfigured in a vertical orientation, whereas the Active arrives preconfigured in a horizontal orientation, though both can be set up either way. Like the Active, the fit for me is the same. I wear size 34 jeans and when adjusted to my waist there are an extra 10" or so of strap left, so this should fit any child and most adults who are at least somewhat active as long as you're under 45" around (the max setting). This could be extended with the addition of a simple 1" strap with buckles you can find here on Amazon or a local retail store for a few dollars, though I would use caution depending on your size as the buoy may not be large enough to support your weight, so test it out before use.Just like the active, packed up into the bag with a loaded CO2 it is a pretty snug fit, but it isn't hard to pack. The activation mechanism itself works in the same manner, a simple tug on the cord activates the seal puncture for the cylinder. The pouches are different in that the buoy itself is held in with a Velcro flap on the Active, but the super stout binding on the Extreme as well as Velcro. Another difference worth noting is that the buoy material on the Extreme is quite a bit more robust than that the one on the Active, which is plenty tough as it is. Like the Active, on the end of the deployment cord is a whistle, and since the leash is long enough you are able to use it once the floatation device has been deployed. Unfortunately, it also leverages a single proprietary threaded 18g Co2 cylinder instead of the widely available 12g ones. While it may be a matter of volume, it wouldn't be hard to devise a similar mechanism which would allow the loading of two 12g cartridges. At this point my review is purely on the product itself, but not the performance as I have not used it yet. I am going to be testing it in the ocean next week and will update my review with feedback on wearing, deploying, and attempting to stay afloat with it as well as a direct comparison with the Restube Active. Until then, as far as the product goes, it looks extremely promising.

My child is a triathlete who sometimes trains in the ocean. That scares me. We went to the pier once and saw these swimmers dragging tubes behind them so people could see where they were. I thought that was a good idea. Turns out, these tubes can be used the same way. They come with one little canister for rapid inflation, but we can blow on it to make the tube for dragging. The bag can be worn around the waist. I put it on myself to try it out. It fits fine and is adjustable, but honestly, it's not going to fit someone who is exceptionally barrel-shaped. I guess most people who need this are pretty fit.My child plans to use this on their next training session. It does give me peace of mind.

It is great knowing you have that added security of an instant buoy. We like to snorkel and hookah dive at the lake. My wife loves paddle boarding as well. I feel so much safer with her and myself having an instant floatation device on our person at all times. This little pouch is just over 5 inches long and weighs only a few oz. It fit my wife well. I had to extend the web strap on mine, but I am pretty chunky. You don't even notice it's on after a while.Note: this does not take standard refill cartridges. You can purchase them separately. You may want to order them when ordering this item so that you can try it out and still reuse it.
