To someone who has emphatically refused to read any novel of fantasy, this book will not make even a modicum of sense. However, to a person who has read Tolkien and found his writings like layers of rich tapestry, to be peeled back one after the other, each richer than the one before it, this book is best taken as an aperitif or possibly a dessert to reading the LOTR adventure that began with The Hobbit. It will offer a lot of insights and back story into the greatest series of high fantasy ever written. A Game of Thrones is exquisite and The Witcher is sublime and both, on the telly, are visually appealing but neither of them would have ever been conceived had it not been for the colour of myth and magic that Professor Tolkien gifted to the world.

Das Hörbuch war für mich persönlich leider in weiten Teilen ungenießbar, denn ich konnte mit der Lesweise und Sprachmelodie von Brian Sibley nicht klarkommen, fand sie teils einfach unangenehm, überbetont, und den Text oder einzelne Worte seltsam (über-)betont. Teils klang die Aussprache sehr 'feucht' und gelispelt, das ging mir einfach insgesamt auf die Nerven, zumal er im Wechsel mit einem professionellen, hervorragenden Sprecher mit sehr angenehmer Stimme vorträgt, sodass der Kontrast alles Störende noch mehr betont. Ich konnte mich nicht daran gewöhnen.Das ist sehr schade, weil die Kategorie der Begleitbücher zu Tolkien bei Audible super ist und bisher immer von Samuel West und Timothy West gelesen wurden. Die machen das hervorragend.Leider musste diesmal der Autor/Herausgeber unbedingt selber lesen, was für mich fast immer ein Fehler ist. Wer toll schreiben kann muss nicht automatisch gut vorlesen oder vortragen können, es ist eher eine sehr rare Gabe. Neil Gaiman kann es, Stephen Fry, die meisten anderen sollten es Experten überlassen. Das ist natürlich auch wieder nur meine ganz persönliche Meinung.Ich habe das Hörbuch zurückgegeben und mir das Buch (gebundene Ausgabe) gekauft. Ich lese es lieber das nächste Mal selber, inhaltlich fand ich es für Tolkien-Fans, die Hintergrundwissen und mehr Entwürfe und Fragmente von Tolkiens Erzählungen etc. mögen, nämlich sehr gelungen.Und so kann ich auch die vielen schönen Zeichnungen von Alan Lee betrachten.

Printing error in this "deluxe" edition, the first endpaper does not contain Alen Lee's illustration "The Fall of Numenor". The most beautiful and most important illustration of this edition...

Interessante und sehr gute Aufbereitung der unterschiedlichen Quellen bzw. Schriften Tolkiens, die im Kontext zum Haupt-Thema (der Fall Numenors) stehen.Spannend und mit sonorer Stimmlage vorgetragen, die zur atmosphärisch dichten und mystischen Erzählweise beiträgt.

Absolute must have if your interested generally in the second age and specifically of the island realm of the Edain. You will read everything from the plants and birds of the island, to the first meeting of the Edain with the Men of ME, to the rise of Sauran, and surprise, the Fall of Numenor. Beautiflly edited and and must have compilation of Tolkien's works and letters on the subject.A note about the quality of the print: unlike the books Beren and Luthien, Fall of Gondolin, and The Children of Hurin from this publisher, which I found the paper quality lacking compared to the Silmarilion, the quality is great! In fact just like the quality of the Silmarilion. Not to mention of course, the amazing art of Alan Lee.Summary: worth every penny, plus some!
