These plugs are made specifically for the VAG group 1.8 engines. They are pre-gapped at 0.80mm. The plugs I removed were Super Bosch which have three points on the outer rim of the plug instead of the single centre point of the NGK plugs. I read in some of the VW blogs that the single point plug works better in the 1.8 engine.Installing these spark plugs made a great improvement to the performance of my Passat 1.8T Variant. My VAG.COM diagnostics showed the ignition angle at idle before changing the plugs was about 6 degrees after top dead centre (ATDC) when it should be about 6 degrees before top centre (BTDC). These new plugs immediately set the ignition angle to the correct position. The engine runs smoother with improved acceleration. My year of Passat (2002) was fitted with coil-packs which were known to fail. One had failed on mine already. Interestingly, shortly after fitting these new plugs another coil-pack failed - so I replaced the remaining three. I wonder if the new plugs are so much more efficient that they finally caused the ageing coil-pack to fail. If so, and you have a 2002 1.8T VAG engine, maybe you should also replace all four coil-packs at the same time as the plugs before they let you down too!I noticed some online blogs mention smearing an anti-lock compound onto the threads before fitting. The NGK website advise against this because it will reduce compression if the plugs loosen. NGK also recommend a torque setting of 25 to 30 Nm for aluminium engines. Do NOT exceed this - you MUST use a torque wrench! My car is running like a dream now, so these NGK plugs are highly recommended.
