I purchsed the Powertel 880 together with an additional handset, the Powertel 710.These are not cheap telephones and I am very disappointed for a number of reasons.a) On the corded base unit the display type face is of poor quality and does not stay illuminated the whole time. It is also difficult to read the type from an angle.b) Trying to assume the call from a cordless unit when the answer phone is switched on is not user-friendly, inconsistent and consequently very frustrating.c) The way that “received” calls and “made” calls are stored and recorded is irritating and not user friendly.d) Also, these calls have to be deleted separately on each handset; again very irritating and illogical. If you don’t want them on one hand set you don’t want them on any.e) The icons on the buttons are not easily identifiable with their function and could have been better thought out.All in all, I am very disappointed with this purchase and regret making it.

I bought this phone as I'm hard of hearing. I also bought three additional 701 DECT handsets which linked in very easily. The coded hanset has a very loud ringer which can be adjusted, the same witht eh cordless handset. The volume while on a call is very good and can be bossted by another 40DB if required. So the loudness side of things is very good. But it all goes wrong form there. My gripe with this phone is that Amplicomm have saved money by using icons to label all the buttons. Im guessing they have done this so they don't have to customise the label for each language market. The down side to this is that even the simplest, most commonly used button - the "redial" button - you have to look in the instruction manual as it doesn't have its own dedicated button - it uses a shared button! The menu button is clunky and not at all intutive. There is nothing about this phone that you can discover and work out for your self - its' really bad.Nowadays I expect companies to produce elegant, intuitive phones which are blindingly obvious how to use - they are telephones after all - Amplicomm needs to go back to school to get this right.I can't really recommend this phone to elderly folks because its not easy to use. As it is, Im going to write my own guide and print out for my own family to use...I would hesitate to recommend this phone to elderly folks because its not intuitive. As it is, I'm going to write and print out a quick guide for my own family to use...The instruction manual is also full on mistakes in the instructions they give - if you carefully follow them, the way they describe, certain functions do not work, you have to make an additional undocumented steps.Anybody looking at the Powertel 880 should have a really good look at the Geemark

I have only had this a couple of days but I have already found a serious unexpected problem. I have the Powertel 780 base and a 701 linked to it. Both have the same fault, so it is part of the design. The phone with boost switched on is certainly loud enough but when you are speaking on it, it completely cuts out the other end. Only when you stop speaking does it then, a second later, let you hear the other person again. This is fine only if you each carefully take it in turns to speak. But it effectively wrecks any normal conversation in which people speak quite quickly after each other or even before the other is finished or when the other pauses slightly. You are constantly missing the first word or two of what the other person says or, if they say anything while you are actually speaking, you miss it entirely without either of you being aware of it! So, although what you do hear is now made easily loud enough to understand, you now have the new problem of not hearing some of it at all. The effect of this is like using a phone with the signal constantly momentarily dropping out.So for normal use you have to switch boost off and you then have a phone no louder than normal, if not quieter. The boost could help only if you are desperate to hear someone very quietly spoken at the other end or you know each other and take careful turns to speak. If knowing this, you think the phone could still be of some use, then aside from it being complicated to set up and the volume control buttons being EXACTLY where your thumb naturally holds the phone, it is perhaps OK. But I will almost certainly be sending it back. All I have got from it is a helpfully louder ring and a volume boost facility that will only very occasionally be of some use. I am surprised no-one else seems to have mentioned this problem but maybe people overlook it in their relief at getting something loud enough. I would like to know whether there is any other amplified phone out there that does not work the same way.

I already have the main phone plus extra handset of the same phone and needed another handset. After I ordered Amazon phoned me to check that I realized that this was not a stand-alone phone but a addition to a main cordless phone base station. Top marks to Amazon for this attention to detail. The new handset was quickly added to the cordless network and information about, e.g., date and time, was automatically transmitted to it from the base-station. It's simple matter of pressing a button on the extra handset when sited near the base station and pressing another button on the base-station shortly after to link the new handset into the system. It's best to have the new handset next to the base-station for this pairing. These phones have a very good range of options for improving the sound for those of us who are hard of hearing. I can have my own profile with extra amplification and another person can have a different profile that doesn't involve such amplified sound.

neat handset with good firm buttons and clear tone. Works well as a slave unit to a similar master phone.
