I was looking for a way to thread a 1” ball on a tripod so that I could put a RAM tablet holder on a tripod. RAM Mounts and BRCOVAN are two of many manufacturers selling round plates with a 1" ball and a 1/4-20 thread/stud on Amazon.The BRCOVAN KWG-R14 (1" ball adapter with 1/4-20 stud) is much smaller than the RAM round plate, and it can be used with and without the 1/4-20 stud. The stud was lightly glued, and was easily removed with an Allen wrench. Without the stud, the plate can be put on a tripod to act as an anchor point for a RAM arm. With the stud, the plate can be used as a mounting point for a camera, GoPro, or other accessories with a 1/4-20 threaded hole. The rubber ring on the bottom of the round plate appears to be an o-ring in a groove.The RAM Mounts RAM-B-202U (round plate with 1" ball) is much larger at the base, and has holes around the perimeter for attaching to many RAM accessories. The 202U does not come threaded and with a 1/4-20 stud, however, drilling and then tapping with a 1/4-20 tap is very easy to do as the metal is aluminum.The RAM-B-202AU is the exact same round plate as the 202U but comes threaded and with a 1/4-20 stud installed. The stud can be removed. The 202AU round plate can be bought separately (although I can’t find it on Amazon today 2022/09/10) or as part of a kit such as the RAM-B-166-202AU kit.The seven mounting holes of the RAM 202U and 202AU can also be drilled and tapped with a 1/4-20 tap. It’s tight, but you could mount two GoPros on a single RAM round plate using 1/4-20 studs/bolts on these holes if you're like me and don't have a 360 camera.Mounting a camera on the 1/4-20 stud in the center of the RAM plate, I found that cameras came loose from vibration. Adding a thin piece of rubber spacer helped give it friction and prevent loosening.As to the 1” ball, both feel about the same hardness. Durability would be a good thing to compare and report back in the future.Considering that the price is the same between the BRCOVAN and RAM round plates, maybe the RAM plate is more versatile.
