My husband and I had no prior experience putting down a hardwood floor. We chose an unfinished character grade walnut and installed it ourselves (well, he installed it, I helped). We wanted a low luster finish unlike a regular polyurethane, and found information on hardwax oil finishes which sounded like what we were looking for. We ordered 2 liters of the Ciranova Hardwax Oil in natural to cover approximately 275 square feet. We purchased another liter halfway through the project just to be sure we didn't run out. I started applying the hardwax oil by hand in the small upstairs hallway. I applied a relatively light coat to a 2x3 foot section with a rag, waited 5 minutes, then removed any excess with a clean rag. I found that 5 minutes was key. If it dried for too long, it was difficult to remove. Moved to the next section, repeat. There should be no apparent buildup of the hardwax oil. Do not walk on it for 6-8 hours. I put 3 coats on the hallway floor, and by the third coat I had attained a soft glow in the wood as opposed to the shine of polyurethane on top of the wood. The living room was more of a challenge due to the size of the room. We purchased a second hand floor buffer and applied the hardwax oil by machine and then removed the excess by hand. It took 4 coats to get the same luster as the hallway. One of the things that pleasantly surprised me about the hardwax oil was that dust and pet hair did not get stuck in the finish as it would with polyurethane. Also, there was no unpleasant chemical odor.I won't say that it was a piece of cake, but there was nothing difficult about applying this product, other than the need for some elbow grease and the resultant sore knees. I would recommend this as a do it yourself project for confident homeowners. The results were absolutely worth it. The product is quite forgiving, so if you miss a spot you can go over it again. It has been holding up well, but we've been careful because walnut can dent fairly easily. Touch-ups can be accomplished with a little hardwax oil, as opposed to polyurethane which has to be sanded and reapplied. The company was fantastic to deal with. Our first shipment was damaged by UPS, and a call to the 800 number put me directly in contact with the owner who had a new shipment at my door the next day. Awesome customer service.
