A good Korean dictionary (for foreign learners) should:- be ordered by hangeul- show romanization of the headword (with phonetical changes and vowel length)- show the different meanings of the headword, as well as idioms containing it- contain grammar constructs, such as -기 때문 or -은 채- show the irregularity of verbs such as 듣다 (들으-) or 짓다 (지어-)- show hanja (and preferably constituent words, when available)The Collins "Essential Edition" dictionary satisfies only the first and partly the second. It is of course a pocket dictionary, so I didn't expect much. But on top of having a very limited selection of words, they are ordered illogically. So for example, 말 or 말씀 means "word", "speech" etc., but 말 also means "horse". In this dictionary, the headword 말 has the definition "horse", and under this there are various idioms and compounds containing 말 _independently_ of their meaning, so you find 말을 못 하는 "dumb" and even 주말 "week" under "horse", which is nonsense. On the other hand, 말씀 has _no_ definition at all, just a few example sentences. And unfortunately, this is not an exceptional case. The only dictionary I know that satisfies the above criteria is the Martin-Lee-Chang dictionary, published by Yale in 1967. It is out of print, and has a somewhat outdated transliteration.

Having only recently begun to learn Korean, with my focus at first being to learn Hangul, I wasn't sure whether I needed a dictionary at this stage but, after examining a number of them on the Amazon pages, I rather liked the look and content of this Collins version.Dictionaries are never the easiest books to read, because of the sheer amount of text that has to be included on every page, words tend to be on the small side. Obvious really, otherwise even a small dictionary would be 2 or 3 times the size and cost substantially more. This book is no exception to that but I have to say I am delighted that the Hangul is printed in a clear bold font with crisp edges. Even for a learner like me, I was able to see each character clearly, and that is vital. The book is divided into sections, the bulk of the first part is Korean to English, the bulk of the second part is English to Korean. The central section introduces Korean grammar. Although a dictionary is not intended to be a learning tool, as such, there is a wealth of quality information in this book of almost 400 pages.I was really pleased with the quality and the content - and the price on Amazon was particularly good also. I might be buying a dictionary a bit early in my learning process but I am glad I did. I can fully recommend this volume and I know I will be dipping into it a whole lot in the months/years to come.
