I bought this as a panner for a telephoto lens. I wanted to be able to level the lens quickly to be able to pan the horizon, and this works great for that. I use it on bogen/manfrotto tripods where the binding set screws hold it securely. Very satisfied.A game changer for me, though, was to add a self-sticking rubber pad to the top. This held the panning head that I put on top of it securely, so that it doesn't unscrew while panning. This head also gets a second use as a leveler for astronomy mounts, e.g., the iOptron cube and its relatives. This makes setup of these electronic heads easy and simple.

Easy to use and saves me having to level the tripod with its legs. Holds my star adventure tracker with camera, long lense, and counterweight no problem. It stays in place, and you don’t have to turn blue trying to lock it down.

Well made and sturdy. The rival of the more expensive one. I would recommend this one over any other…it is that good. Just perfect for panoramas and anything else that requires a perfectly level working surface.

I bought this to use for shooting HDR photos with a 5D on a panoramic head, and using a Theta Z. I need to be able to level the camera as accurately as possible for this purpose. After testing this leveling head, I've found that the bubble level built-in is not very effective. It's not that it's not accurate, it's more that it doesn't allow for very fine adjustment. My pano head (Fanotec) doesn't have leveling mechanism built-in but it does have a level. The level on the Fanotec is much more sensitive, allowing you to really dial in an accurate level. So putting the Fanotec on this Sunwayfoto head, I was able to use the leveling adjustment of the Sunway, looking at the bubble level on the Fanotec, and get an accurate level. But it was very hard to get a good level using just the bubble level on the Sunway.Overall, the quality of this head seems good, the adjustments work smoothly and it seems to lock in place effectively. In summary I would say if you would be using this product with another head or camera that has a more accurate level, this could work for you, because it does allow for adjusting on all axes at once, and it's not as expensive as other higher-end models. But if you're going to rely on the bubble level on this head (for example when shooting with the Theta Z), you might want to look elsewhere.

There is not much info out there on the Sunwayfoto tripod products, but I decided to give them a try. I was tired of dealing with my cheap ball head... any adjustment throws everything off. I was originally looking at geared tripod heads, but they are large and heavy and seem like overkill for landscape photography. I decided on the combination of this leveling base, and the Sunwayfoto DT03S 2 way pan + tilt head (see my review of that also). The idea is that you plop down your tripod, and quickly get the legs down without worrying about being completely level. Next you level the head using this leveling base, and lock it in. Now I can adjust pan and tilt easily with the head on top of this base, without worrying about the camera being leveled. The base seems well built, and the bubble level is large and with my setup easy to view. It has the ability to pan (with a lock), but the index marks are so small they are unreadable. If you are planning to use the panning function, and need index marks, be aware of that. The locking mechanism is where my main complaint comes in. When I mounted my largest lens (nikon 200-500 f/5.6) I found I had to really tighten down the ring to lock the base. For a smaller lens it is not a problem, but larger lenses will require some extra tightening. Once tightened down it felt pretty stable, but I'm not sure I would put anything more than 10lbs on top of it. When you go to loosen the ring, if it is really tight, you may start unscrewing this base from your tripod. There is nothing to grip onto except for the locking ring. I used some Loctite threadlocker on the tripod screw, since I don't plan on removing the base from my tripod, but again... it could be an issue if you are using large heavy lenses and want to remove the base on a regular basis.I think this combo is going to work ok for me, even if it is not completely ideal. I will come back and give an update if things don't work out.
