I got this after getting a lot of reading pleasure from the British ones. I found this more consistent but it still had some absolute gems. For one it got me into Raymond Carver with the enigmatic 'The Collectors'. 'The Wife of his Youth' by Charles W Chesnutt was genius. A perfect short story, the narrative just kept building perfectly and the ending was a shock. 'Two Friends' by Mary Wilkins Freeman was moving, 'Trophy's by Edith Wharton was so tense, 'New York to Detroit' by Dorothy Parker was heartbreaking, 'Young Goodman Brown's by Nathaniel Hawthorne had an amazing atmosphere, almost bordering on horror, 'The First Seven years' by Bernard Malamud made me think after the story, 'Reunion by John Cheever at first glance is humorous but then I felt the sadness of it and Edgar Alan Poes story 'The Tell Tale Heart' was masterful. There wasn't really a bad one and none outstayed their welcome. Hope they do another one of these.

Reading this collection of short stories provides an overview of two centuries of American writing. More of the writers are known than lesser known, but what a pleasure to read shorter versions of classic work. Kudos too for the excellent referencing and documentation that allows a deeper study for those interested.

"short stories "de différents auteurs qui traitent différents sujets à différentes époque de la grande histoire des Etats unis. Le lecteur va rencontrer différents personnages: femmes qui luttent contre leur soumission, enfants marqués par les drames de la ségrégation et des pendaisons en particulier, un fermier qui tente de lutter contre son propre cloisonnement dans un village isolé...etc.
