If you are not familiar with Chinese history and look for an entertaining first contact, one that covers a lot of terrain and epochs, this book will serve you very well.Then again, perfect it is not. The author emphasizes the lives of some female historic figures - sometimes for good and obvious reasons, but occasionally the sketched biographical details do not add up to much.The book is strongest on modern history, and it shows that the author really knows what she is writing about - and very capable of focussing on the really important core events and people and developments, and how they interconnect. The weakest parts cover the early history: This is a popular work, I get it, but historic facts and archaeological findings, sources, myth and speculation are sometimes hard to tell apart.As long as you treat the book less as an authoritative collection of facts, but as a guide to what things one might want to find more about, it works really well.If you do speak German, Konrad Seitz' only slightly dated (and highly prophetic) "China - Eine Weltmacht kehrt zurück" is a great supplement to this book (or vice versa). Seitz covers Chinese history from a distinctive European point of view, and he emphasizes how much China has influenced Western culture and civilization over the last millenia.

この The Shortest History シリーズはよく書けている、いい教養書です。教科書風に事実を羅列したドライな記述になりがちな歴史を、要領よくしかもストーリーとして飽きさせない文章でまとめています。著者 Linda Jaivin は中国の専門家（Sinologist）ですが、小説やエッセーも出版している方で、さすがの語り口、文章です。私たちは中国の地名や人名は漢字の表記と読みで知っているので、中国語の発音をアルファベットで表記したピンインに慣れていないところがやや難と言えなくもありません。けれども、漢字を併記にしてくれているところもいくつかありますし、世界史や日本史で習った中国の歴史を思い出しながら読んで、ところどころインターネットで検索すれば、それほど難しくはないでしょう（記憶するつもりならまた別ですが...）。ところどころ挿入されている図や写真などもなかなか気が効いていて、いいです。なにより、現代の世界を知るうえで中国に関する知識、つまり中国がどういうプロセスを経て現在の中国になったのかを理解することは重要ですし、先に書いたようにストーリーとしてたいへん面白く書かれているので、歴史に興味のある方には、おススメです。

A well-written journey through major periods of what we now call Chinese history. Claims for different regions to have historically been part of what we now call China can be seen in an unbiased context.

An excellent book, one of the best and most detailed researched books I've found on such a large topic. Easy to read and does not give you acres of gratuitous waffle. A really good backgrounder for those interested in studying the history of China - but lack a few months to read a tome or two!
