I'm flabbergasted that I can STILL get this exact replacement TRUVATIV outer front chainring for my 2004 (21 year-old!) Specialized Hardrock "Sport" 24 speed (3 chainrings in front) MTB. The bike overall has been bullet-proof, the A1 Aluminum frame is really well made and is stiff but absorbs shock really well, the RST fork still works REALLY well and is super compliant, the bike fits me perfectly, works really well for my riding style which is around 80 miles a week all street use. The only thing was recently I noticed a grinding noise and rough feeling when pedaling on the smallest REAR cog (11 tooth) no matter whether I was on the middle or outer front chainring. My original chainrings look "used" but the teeth don't really look worn, the rear cassette doesn't really look worn out, but the chain was definitely past the .75% wear limits on some of the links. So with around 3,500 miles on the bike I figured I'd do the chain first (Shimano HG40) which got rid of a lot of the noise and rough feeling when riding on the smallest rear cog (11 tooth). I did 12 miles yesterday with the new chain but still using the old original chainrings and cassette. The drivetrain is MUCH smoother now, but is a still a little rough when pedaling using the 8th cog (the smallest, 11 tooth) on the rear and biggest front ring (42 tooth). And I did feel a skip once which seemed to be coming from the chain slipping one tooth on the cassette(?) when pedaling hard while standing and using the big front ring and 11 tooth smallest rear cog. Never felt that before ever on this bike since new. So I'll replace the rear cassette next and see what that does as far as getting rid of the rough pedaling feeling and that one-time chain skip yesterday, and then will throw on this new front ring as a final step and update this review further. I was doing one thing at a time so I can see which changes make the most difference. Only ONE negative on this chainring but it is not the chainring's fault. I was hoping I could put this "outer" 42 tooth ring on the MIDDLE chainring position on my bike so I could make it a 1x8 and get rid of the front derailleur, front shifter, and eliminate the other two front chainrings. But this OUTER ring doesn't fit over the middle CHAINRING spider arms on the TRUVATIV 175MM ISOFLOW crankarm. I would either have to grind some material off the inside edge of 4 mounting tabs on this chainring so it would slide over the 4 crank arm shoulders or grind some of the crankarm middle ring position crankarm shoulders to get this to fit. I think they maybe deigned the crankarm and chainrings this way to make sure people didn't mix up outer and middle chainrings when mounting them on the crank. Each TUVATIV "Trushift" outer and middle ring has asymetrical ramps and pins to help shifting back and forth between the middle and outer chainrings. I have a feeling that if you installed them reversed on the crankarm it might actually damage the chain/sprockets, not shift correctly, and maybe even jam the chain between the chainrings. But I think the OUTER front ring might work fine if installed by itself on the MIDDLE chainring position to create a 1x8 drivetrain because then you aren't using any of the shifting pins or ramps on the ring. But as I said, the outer 42-tooth ring will NOT mount on the middle chainring position without some chainring or crank arm modifications. I've been looking for a 42 tooth chainring that WILL fit the middle position on this crankarm without any modifications, but that may not exist. Far as I know, back in 2004 when this bike was made, nobody was making single front chainring MTBS with 9-12 speed cassettes and the idea of using a big 42-toothed OUTER chainring like this one on the MIDDLE chainring position probably didn't occur to anyone. I see current 1-9/12 speed MTBs with a smaller 30 tooth single front rings and the same small11-tooth cog I have on my cassette, but those are 27.5 or 29-inch wheels which cover more ground per pedal revolution. I COULD just use my current 32 tooth MIDDLE ring to create a 1/8, but I want the HIGHER overall gearing of the 42-tooth for fast street riding when using my 13 or 11 tooth rear cogs.

This chainring is a perfect replacement for a worn chainring on a Marin Ovation crankset. The original crankset appears to be unobtainable so this item saves having to find & buy a full crankset that actually fits.
