I recently saw a video by MarkusPix on geared tripod heads. And it turns out the timing was perfect since I was just thinking I needed something like this for some projects coming up. Thanks to Markus, I zeroed in on a couple of options in my price range: the Benro GD3WH and the VERTECFOTO Geared Tripod Head. There is another one called Sunwayfoto GH-ProIIS with the crank adjustment and small size, but knobs adjust the horizon leveling and the up and down but there is no side to side adjustment. But I find I don’t need the horizon fine adjustment, but I do need the horizontal and vertical fine adjustment for framing. So I eliminated this one.So that left me with the Vertecfoto which has the fine adjustment on both the vertical and horizontal. The knobs are easy to turn and it’s light weight. With the Benro head the spikey humps hurt my hands after using it a while. It does have fine adjustment on the horizon leveling, but I find I don’t really need that.So now I prefer the Vertecfoto over the Benro. Also, with the Benro, you can only loosen the knob for quick horizontal or vertical movement individually but you can’t loosen both together and move the camera too. This is slower than with the Vertecfoto where you can just loosen both horizontal and vertical to move the camera in both directions. This makes setting up for a shot faster with the Vertecfoto. Also I find the knob placements more convenient on the Vertecfoto and they’re smoother and easier to turn than the Benro. And I like the small size and lower price of the Vertecfoto. I even tried it with my big (M4/3) 100-400 lens and it works well with it too with my Lumix GH6 which together weigh 4 lbs.To see my video review on Youtube, search for the title “Comparison of Benro GD3WH and Vertecfoto Geared Tripod Heads”.

Tried this tripod head with a large spotting scope looking up at the moon. Seems to hold the weight well but you do have to keep the locking mechanism tight with more weight coming onto the gears as you aim higher in the sky.I don’t have a lot of experience with devices like this but it meets the needs I was aiming for, which is to follow sky objects smoothly.

When attached to a really good tripod ( and mine is good), the VERTECFOTO Geared Tripod Head is excellent... the geared knobs work well for astronomy type instruments (telescope, camera, etc.)... one thing to NOTE is that the "side to side" adjustment IS NOT geared (as the web page says), it is just an unlock-and-turn adjustment... I am very satisfied.

I found this geared head perfect for what I was looking for. I only have one very minor criticism to get out of the way, which is that the 3/8" tripod screw hole on the bottom of the unit does not have a recessed relief for the collar of a 3/8" to 1/4" adapter screw to sit flush. However, a few quick turns of a countersink bit fixed the problem for me, and this head now sits perfectly flat on my quick release mounting plate. This head feels very sturdy, and I am confident in it's advertised load rating. The instructions don't explain how to adjust the factory set stiffness of the head, but the allen wrenches are included, and it's easy enough to figure out... though I don't think I will need to do any adjusting as I like the amount of tension it has out of the box. I was surprised at how little backlash there is in the gears. For the price I was expecting less in the quality. I would say it has less backlash than the fine tuning declination mount I have on my Skywatcher Star Adventurer declination bracket... and it has one additional axis of geared fine tuning which is exactly why I bought this head. It allows me to re-center my subject every once in a while during a long night of tracked shooting (and for re-centering the sun during the upcoming eclipse). Even though the backlash is minimal, it is a non-issue as I will never be turning the geared knobs WHILE taking an exposure (only between exposures). I have not experienced any "creep" in the gears after I lock in on my target either, which makes sense because it appears to be using worm gears just like the Skywatcher fine tuning declination mount. This head also allows you to use the gear knobs after locking down the lever screws, just like the Skywatcher fine tuning declination bracket. This allows you to make those adjustments without having to release the position of the head. This head has a lower profile than many other of the geared tripod heads, takes up less space in my gear bag, and I have not seen any other geared heads that are lighter weight. So far, I am very impressed with this head and plan to use it during the upcoming eclipse on my Skywatcher Star Adventurer equatorial mount with my Sigma 150-500mm and Sony A7IV (6 lbs, 11 oz)... because minor adjustments will be necessary as I will not have the luxury of dialing in perfect polar alignment to avoid the target moving out of frame. Now, if Amazon can just sell me blue skies...

It seems like new designed geared head, it is well made! I cannot feel gear play during reversing direction. Fine-tune knobs are very smooth, impressed with the quick switch between fine-tuning and big movement, fast and easy! I am happy with what I got by now.
