Finding growing containers that can be stowed away when not being used can be tricky so, when the '5-Pack, Vinitoy 15 Gallon (60-Litres) Heavy Duty Fabric Containers' came onto the Vine Program, I thought it would be an ideal item to review. The Containers come vacuum-packed and with the addition of a potting mat. First impressions are favourable - they seem sturdy and are well stitched and reinforced in the right places. The containers are permeable and so let water out - so ensure your pots are either on a tray or outside! The 60 litre size is bigger than I expected, but will give plenty of room for my veg to grow. They are designed with handles however, whilst having the handles do give you something to grab on to, when the soil/compost is in, it is quite difficult to move - a two-person job for the 60 litre bags! The potting mat has poppers to give it temporary sides - a handy addition if you don't have somewhere to open your compost bags and fill these containers. The price seems reasonable (at time of writing - £21.79) for the amount of grow bags you are getting, and the fact they can be folded away is a clever idea.

🥦 These grow bags are made from thick, breathable fabric with well-stitched seams throughout. They do let water drain through, so they need to be placed somewhere that won’t be affected by runoff. Once filled with soil and moisture, they are extremely heavy, so while the handles help with initial positioning, they aren’t really useful for moving them later. I made sure to place them in their final spot before filling. They have plenty of depth, making them ideal for growing potatoes—starting with shallow planting and adding soil as the plants grow. They also work well for setting up a runner bean or pea circle with a trellis. There’s no mention of UV resistance in the marketing, so time will tell how long the material lasts, but with the right care, they should be good for multiple seasons as is mentioned.🥔 The potting mat is a good size and does a great job of protecting surfaces, especially when working indoors. I found it easy to wipe clean after use. The material itself seems durable, but the plastic poppers that clip the corners together don’t feel particularly strong. I can see them wearing out over time, though swapping them for metal ones would be simple enough if needed in the future. That aside, the mat is waterproof and keeps mess under control when transplanting, potting or preparing soil. ✔️

Vinitoy grow bags 5 pack, 60L: These 60L versions are BIG bags - they are 33cm deep which is not overly deep, but I've grown a lot of potatoes in tubs and bags of similar depth and as long as they have the space around them they grow just fine. At 50cm diameter, they have plenty of space, so I'm hopeful of a good crop of Wilja potatoes this year. They are strong bags compared to similar ones, possibly stronger than most, though I still would not want to try to lift them when anymore than half full, as it might be expecting too much of them to expect them to hold the weight without tearing somewhere. A good pack of 5, with a very handy bonus 'potting mat' included.

Easier for me to use with the handle, and not so messy as the tomato grow bags. No drainage holes but water seeps out below. You need tray below as usual. They look smaller than expected at 7 litres....but they take quite a lot of compost to fill so not small! I think suitable for many types of plants especially vegetables.Mine are now full of compost. They seem very strong, so far so good.

These arrived just in time for the start of my Spring vegetable growing, with chitted potatoes to plant up and put in a frost-free greenhouse. I chose the largest size of bags for my specific purposes and I was impressed by the size, proportions and quality of materials and construction. They hold their shape well, which is impressive since they are only being gradually filled up as the potatoes grow. The very sturdy handles make them easy to move (but bear in mind that, given their size, they will inevitably be very heavy when full and watered. It is too early in the growing season to comment on how well they work, but so far they are draining well and keeping the growing potatoes in a suitably damp but not waterlogged environment. I haven't yet found a use for the repotting tray but it is foldable so not taking up much space, and no doubt it will become useful in a few weeks when I start potting up the seedlings I have sown. These bags are good value for money in my view - you can get five big grow bags for less money, but these are strong and well made and more likely than flimsy versions to last several seasons.
