Update 11/12/24. Seller saw my issue with missing parts and offered am amicable solution. Great customer service!I’ve used ball-style moisture meters in the past and find them a less destructive alternative to pin versions that leave marks. For the most part, they work by sending a vibration through wallboard, wood, etc. Since those materials have different densities when wet, the meter can determine variations and render a reading. Are they accurate? Probably not as much as a professional unit costing $100 or more, but they do provide a good starting point in determining possible water intrusion. In my case, Hurricane Milton blew into town and did damage. Some of my neighbors suspected in-the-walls leakage so I went to this meter to start the investigation, so to speak. For the uninitiated, the meter gives a numerical and physical readout.Numerical appears to be factory set from 25 to 45%. Anything within that range or below 25 is considered “okay” although I’d consider anything 40 or above to be damp. One of my neighbors had a standard professional unit that, oddly enough, gave readings in the form of green or red dots but nothing in the way of a physical percentage readout. 1 to 5 green dots means all is well, but 1 to 5 red dots means excess moisture.Question is, by how much? Dots mean nothing without some indication of percentage. He checked one home and gave the owner palpitations when red dots galore flashed all over. This was a couple days after the storm hit. Thousands in repairs and no insurance! Then I get this meter and decide to track the same areas. Mind you, this is 3 weeks after the first test so some of that moisture has undoubtedly dried. My (this) moisture meter did show elevated levels of moisture in nearly all the same areas with levels in the mid to high 30s and one area pegging at 43.So, the first guy wasn’t trying to spook the homeowner after all. This meter, then, does have value after all, even if it is just $30.But all is not well in Pleasant Valley. There are a couple quirks that should be considered before purchasing this:* Ad shows 6 batteries and I got just 3. Sent an email to the seller and I’ll update, if necessary.* Battery cover screw was missing. Not in the box or bag. Also notified the seller. No scuffs or scrapes on this thing so I don’t believe it’s a used unit.* Instructions state you will see a numerical readout and that’s great; however, just what do those numbers mean? Instructions are a bit vague and even I have to assume they represent moisture percentage. So far, I’m pleased with the results and I’ll keep the unit just for future usage, especially since every hardware store in the area wants twice as much for a similar product.

Helpful assuming I've calibrated correctly, if not then that's user error on my part. Recently had a sink leak and after letting the cabinet air dry for a while, I got to use this to determine how I'm going to treat the wood. Weird gadget to have, but so handy especially when you're a homeowner.

Works great. Easy to use, clear instructions. I like that it is surface touch, no need to drive a pin or point into the wood. First one was lost in shipping. Amazon replaced it. Good customer service.

I get no reading what so ever, and I know one wall at least has moisture in it but doesn't pick it up.
