If you like board games, Star Trek AND painting miniatures, this is the perfect item for you. After a couple of games, I am very satisfied with this product and am looking forward to trying out the expansion sets as soon as possible. Beware though, the Borg away team included in this box set is very difficult to use, so I would have the more experienced of the two players attempt to win with them.

This is a desktop dice rolling RPG style game that is pretty easy to follow using simple prompt cards. probably better suited to children age 8 and above and also children who are a little more patient and knowledge of the Star Trek universe may well help them take to the game a little more as well, there is other games in the series so this can be added to at a later stage. You get quite a lot in the box in terms of surface the cards and also all the characters. The game itself will take a couple of hours to play depending on who you are with but it is certainly not a pick up and put away style game.

If you are into Star Trek you will understand the significance of 'Wolf 359' and the name Locutus.This game is based around the 'away team' element of that story line and features combat between the Federation 'away team' (hence the title) and a group of Borg 'drones' led by Locutus. You can play either side, each with their own aims. For the Federation your mission is to find a way to defeat the Borg and ultimately save Earth. If you are the Borg your mission is to 'assimilate' the Federation intruders and open your path to ultimate victory of assimilating Earth itself.However the game is not a 'one trick pony' as the actual detail of the 'mission' for each side is potentially different each turn and driven by 'missions' drawn from decks of cards. Therefore there should always be plenty of variety.When you first get the game you will notice immediately the weight of the box, for its size it is pretty heavy which indicates exactly what you get in the box. Briefly you get two sets of miniatures consisting of 4 Federation members (Riker, Data, Worf and Shelby) and 6 Borg (Locutus and 5 Borg drones). However open the box and underneath the tray containing the miniatures and 12 custom dice - 6 for Federation, 6 for Borg, you will find plenty of other game items/accessories.There are four 'main' playing boards which represent the interior of a wrecked ship along with smaller scenery pieces, multiple board containing tokens you can pop out, a set of 'character' cards used to track the status/progress of the miniatures. 4 decks of cards, 2 for Federation, 2 for Borg, as well as other sundry items such as pegs for the character cards, quick reference cards etc... and two instruction books, one a full game manual, the other a 'quick start' guide. Play is fundamentally turn based and has a limited number of turns which helps to keep the game play quick and fluid.Generally the quality of all the game components is superb. All the card pieces are printed on very heavy duty card (hence the weight) as are the tokens etc... The printing quality of all the items is top notch and the manual/quick start are printed clearly and explain the game mechanics very nicely. Future for the game also looks good as the main game manual mentions future expansions that will include factions for the Klingons as well as others. If you are a trekkie you will be very happy with this game, but even if not you will be able to appreciate the game design as it is relatively straightforwards, but at the same time provides plenty of options and strategy.I would have liked to give this game a 5* review score, but for me the one thing that lets the game down a little is the quality of the miniatures. It's not that they are poorly made as the detail is pretty good, what spoils them for me is firstly that they are designed in a slightly 'cartoon' style which is reminiscent of Japanese Chibi style characters if you are aware of those. This is a pity as the rest of the game is more 'serious' in its overall style. The other thing that could have been done would be to have provided the models pre-painted. While undoubtedly you could paint them yourself, the outcome is determined by your skill and these days it is more common to have printed miniatures when it comes to games such as these. For this reason I have deducted a star.
