I’m not new to Chinese lens brands, and particularly not to Viltrox. My first lens from “the middle kingdom” was TTArtisan 50mm f/1.4 ASPH for my Leica M, and that one already set the expectation for all my future Chinese branded lens purchases — it was great, and provided excellent value. Pretty quickly I followed with multiple Viltrox lenses for my Fuji X-series cameras; first 23mm f/1.4, then 33mm f/1.4 as soon as it was released. None of these lenses ever let me down, despite using them a lot. After my switch from Fuji X system to Sony FE (fullframe), I kept faithful to Viltrox and purchased their awesome 24mm f/1.8, followed more recently by 20mm f/2.8 and 40mm f/2.5. Optically, the 24mm and 40mm easily rival their Sony counterparts, the 24mm f/2.8 G and 40mm f/2.5 G at respective apertures; the only thing that’s “downgrade” with Viltrox is build quality, which is to be expected given their fractional price, then the absence of aperture rings on some of their lenses, and worse AF, but not by much… and still better than Samyang.I also like small lenses, that’s why I use mainly prime lenses. For traveling light I love my Sony A7C, and with that small camera body in mind I was all excited about the new Viltrox 28mm f/4.5. And I was not disappointed. In fact, I have gotten two of these small Viltroxes, for not only my A7C, but also A7M3. The lens is truly almost like a lens cap sized, and despite that, it performs well beyond any of my expectations. Except for some caveats I will list later, it behaves basically like a normal grown-up lens. For family snapshots, reportage/documentary photography, street… for all those genres this lens is an awesome choice, in my opinion. Under most circumstances and for most subjects the sharpness is plentiful, the bokeh is perfectly fine, and the fixed f/4.5 aperture is not limiting. Pair that with the size, weight and “usability”, and you can understand why I have used the words “awesome choice”.When I would look at the lens more from an objective perspective, it is not without faults. The AF is not always the fastest, and struggles in poor light. But who in their right mind would use f/4.5 lens as their only one, and especially in a poor light situations? Similarly the contrast. The lens doesn’t like strongly backlit situation, or sun in the frame; both cause the contrast to significantly decrease, and cause rather ugly light source reflections or contrast loss. However, this effect can also be used creatively for some genres. But objectively, it’s not great. Then there’s vignetting. In most pictures I add some vignette manually in the post process, but if my goal is to have zero vignetting, I wouldn’t pick this lens. The vignetting is severe, and goes smoothly from dark far corners to the center that is light; meaning that if you like vignetting, the character of this lens’ vignetting is rather great, no sudden transitions. And lastly, the sharpness. While being plentiful in the middle 50 % of the image, there’s some decrease towards edges, and especially in the corners. This is no landscape lens by no means. At the same time, I have yet to find any single picture taken with this lens, in its “natural habitat” (snapshots, street) that appears to be insufficiently sharp. And when I consider performance of lenses two or three decades ago, many late MF or early AF 28mm lenses were not any better, despite being ten times heavier, and yet used by many professional reporters. With today’s sharpening and AI-improvement algorithms, with some post-process this lens can be corner-to-corner sharp even for landscape when printed on 10x14” (24x36cm).With all that said, let me repeat, that I do not believe this (or any lens, for that matter) lens is defined by its performance alone. The haptics, usability and image character are a big part of a lens usefulness. This lens will make mid-sized mirrorless camera feel compact, compact mirrorless cameras like a pocketable point and shoot, and when using it for genres where it shines, you quickly forget about any of its downsides. I’m very grateful that I see the Chinese companies such as Viltrox not only copy other, but be explorative, creative, and do something nobody has ever attempted before. True lens cap sized autofocus (!) lens that performs almost like a normal lens. And this is such an experiment. And I think it has paid off. I’m in love with the lens, and since the first one that I ordered in the Indiegogo campaign (this second one followed over Amazon) it has never left my camera bag. It’s not universal lens, it’s not perfect lens, but I can surely say that for me it’s perfect in its imperfections.If you love small lenses, and shoot some of the above-mentioned genres, I highly suggest you to try it. You can always return if disappointed. But I’m pretty sure that for slightly over 100 EUR and in the lens cap size, there’s no alternative, and no lens that ever came close. Believe me, I tried many small lenses. Nothing is like this one. Slide out its lens cover, turn on the camera, and make it disappear in your hands while you focus on your subject… this is it.-Regarding objective performance, look at my samples taken with Sony A7M3, developed in Adobe Camera Raw, no filters, processing "Camera Neutral", default sharpening, no lens profile to compensate vignetting or CA. As you can see on the cropped 1:1 views, on mid distance (5 meters or so) the lens is quite sharp even almost at corners, but little bit of the performance is lost due to slight decentering and field curvature — but it isn't unique to this lens, for example many lenses for Leica M mount have strong field curvature and slight decentering, also because they're small.

Erstmal konnte ich es gar nicht glauben, als ich gesehen habe, dass dieses Objektiv nicht nur eine Festbrennweite, sondern auch eine ... Festblende hat. 4,5. What you see is what you get.Ich liebe Flexibilität beim Fotografieren und fummele ständig an Blende, ISO-Wert und Verschlusszeit rum, deswegen fühle ich mich durch das Viltrox echt eingeschränkt. Aber vermutlich ist das genau die Idee dahinter? Keine Entscheidungen treffen müssen. Blendenvorwahl und los.Die Resultate sind durchaus beachtlich. Mit Gegenlicht kommt das schmale Ding nicht klar, aber ansonsten liefert es Top-Bilder.Für Leute, die eh immer mit Blende 4,5 fotografieren, die mit einer leichten Kamera unterwegs sein wollen, die die Kunst der Beschränkung trainieren möchten oder die sich irgendwo tummeln, wo viel geklaut wird, ist dieses Objektiv eine sichere Wahl. Wer flexibel bleiben möchte, wird eher zum klassischen Objektiv mit normalem Blenden-Range greifen.

Vorweg, das Objektiv ist für Sony E-Mount Vollformat (Fullframe) gerechnet. Ich habe es an einer Alpha 6500 APSC Kamera verwendet und konnte den besten Teil der Linse nutzen.Das VILTROX 28mm F4.5 für Sony E-Mount ist ein Objektiv, das sich durch sein ultraflaches und leichtes Design auszeichnet. Mit nur 60 g Gewicht und einer Tiefe von 15,3 mm ist es brutal kompakt.Positives:Das Objektiv überzeugt mit einer soliden Verarbeitung und lässt sich problemlos am Kameragehäuse befestigen. Der integrierte Schiebeverschluss ist eine kreative Lösung, die zusätzliche Schutzkappen überflüssig macht, auch wenn der Mechanismus beim Verstauen in der Hosentasche etwas unpraktisch sein kann.Die Bildqualität ist für den Preis überzeugend. Die Mitte ist scharf, Farben wirken lebendig, und der Autofokus arbeitet zuverlässig, wenngleich er bei schwachem Licht manchmal an seine Grenzen stößt. Besonders bei spontanen Straßenaufnahmen oder als leichtes Reiseobjektiv spielt das Viltrox seine Stärken aus.Einschränkungen:Die feste Blende von F4.5 schränkt die Einsatzmöglichkeiten bei schwachem Licht oder für kreative Freistellungen ein. Außerdem treten in manchen Situationen Vignettierungen und leichte Unschärfen an den Bildrändern auf, insbesondere bei Gegenlichtaufnahmen. Hier kann Nachbearbeitung helfen, sollte aber eingeplant werden.Fazit:Das VILTROX 28mm F4.5 ist kein perfektes Objektiv, bietet aber für seinen Preis ein stimmiges Gesamtpaket. Es eignet sich hervorragend für Fotografen, die ein leichtes, platzsparendes Objektiv suchen und mit kleinen Kompromissen bei der Bildqualität leben können. Wer ein vielseitigeres Objektiv mit größerer Blendenöffnung sucht, muss jedoch tiefer in die Tasche greifen.

Une jolie surprise. L’objectif est parfaitement fonctionnel, c’est un « vrai » objectif avec autofocus, un poids plume et surtout une netteté surprenante pour le prix. L’ouverture étant fixe, je l’utilise en choisissant une vitesse et en laissant les ISO en mode automatique. Et bien sûr, des limites apparaîtront en très hautes et très basse lumière, là où vous serez aux limites hautes et basses de la sensibilité de votre capteur. Mais la plage d’utilisation reste très vaste. Je l’utilise en photo de rue essentiellement car (i) cet objectif allège considérablement le poids porté et (ii), il rend l’appareil photo beaucoup plus discret. Mais il peut être utile en bien d’autres circonstances bien sûr. Et aussi servir de backup en voyage en cas de casse ou de vol de votre objectif principal. Je l’utilise avec un Sony aIV. Un bon achat.
