I backed this board in the original Kickstarter. It is a well featured RISC-V board. It has a decent amount of memory and an NvME slot available. Absolutely no complaints on the hardware. What divides this board from the very easy to use and well supported Raspberry Pis is in the software. The RISC-V architecture is quite new, and the official software is based on a old Linux kernel. Ubuntu Linux supports this board, but in my experience has been finicky. Where things really get hairy is the booting software (like your PCs BIOS). I have spent a lot of time fiddling with the bootloader to get things right. The bootloader seems to be buggy and frequently changing. It is highly likely that you will brick this board at some point, and recovering it is a major effort of downloading the right versions, finding an up-to-date set of instructions on how to do it. You will likely need a computer with a serial port and terminal software that supports XMODEM file transfer (until this board, I last used XMODEM 40 years ago). This is not a board for beginners.After slamming the software so hard, I will close by saying that once you get the thing booted, it is a joy to work with. I hope that they will get a modern Linux kernel eventually and mke it more foolproof, but such is life on the edge.

First: it's hot! You may think you can get away with no cooling or heat sink, but you can't. Be prepared to boot while monitoring it with a serial (FTDI usb) connection. Docs on boot switches are very confusing. When looking at the writing on the board (where text is not upside-down), SD card boot requires switches to be to the right and to the left. This means the switch closest to GPIO must be moved towards the power connector, and the switch closest to the ports must be moved away from the power connector. Proper switch position is also silk-screened on board, but it's not terribly clear which is Low (0) and which is Hi(1). If you look below the switches, there's a L and H, so that should help, but it took me an hour to see that. Pictures online add to the confusion! When attempting boot, text will show up on your serial connection right away, but it'll never get as far as a username prompt with Debian 202311 (so it won't boot!). But it does boot with Debian 202306 for me. Version shipped was V1.3B. I actually expected it to be much easier to set up; you'll need some experience in creating bootable media, using putty (or Screen on linux), connecting to boards/mcu's via FTDI, familiarity with linux booting and logins and sudo, etc, otherwise don't bother attempting this. Even though I have those qualifications, I almost regretted this purchase because of the frustration, especially with the attempted Debian boot. I still don't know what's wrong with my HDMI, I'm getting nothing, but that's after only a day of tinkering.

With Debian targeting risc-v arch on its next release and having all VF2 components drivers mainlined into linux kernel this board is one of the best R5 machines obtainable to date. It works and boots properly not just eMMC but from M.2 SSD as well, so not having to rely on flaky microsd is a very good thing. Performance is closing up to good arm64 boards as well, I'd say VF2 is quite usable as a development rig and as a general home "web browser" box.

Jag förväntade mig minst avskiljare i nylon som vissa kunder har fått, men nej det är bara ett kort i en låda med bubbelplast, inga skruvar, inga kablar, bara kortet med processor. Utklassad i prestanda av Raspberry Pi 4 diton, men skiljaktligen når mainline Linux betydligt snabbare.Väl anpassat för att förbereda dig för lite vassare RISC-V utveckling än tidigare utbud, klarar emulerade spel till viss del, men se till att grafiken kör antingen Vulkan eller GLES2-3 då det inte finns inbyggt standard OpenGL i PowerVR Imaginations utgåva av drivrutiner. Klarar surfa i Firefox, men lite väl för klen med flera tabbar, elinks från rkd77 är att föredra. ;)
