My girlfriend is always trying to loosen up her old white straight boyfriend by giving him hard-core feminist and nonbinary fiction. I just finished a book she's been bugging me to read for years, "Paul takes the form of a mortal girl" by Andrea Lawlor, that blew me away. It's got a supernatural twist, the narrator is literally a gender shape-shifter, who has pretty much every type of sex with every type of person. But overall the book is very gritty and realistic, and journalistic in the way it describes 1990s America, AIDS, the queer scene in NYC and San Francisco. But what really astonishes me is the writing, which is also shape-shifting, veering effortlessly from snarky gayer-than-thou to heartbreaking-poetic, and totally immersive. I don't understand why this book didn't get more attention. It probably got typecast as queer fiction, but it transcends that or any other niche. It's just a great book, of the highest literary quality.

"Paul Takes the Form of A Mortal Girl" ist zugleich sehr queer, sehr lustig und sehr unterhaltsam. Ein Must für all diejenigen, die Englisch gut verstehen und queere Literatur lesen (wollen).

This was definitely an unexpected read for me, I got it because my favorite author tweeted about it LOL Gave me an interesting glimpse into a world I know next to nothing about (the early 90s US gay scene) which I enjoyed a lot

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! Awesome setting in the 90s, followed by a shapeshifting queer main character - it's like this book was made for me!
